Passage: NZ to Vanuatu Day 4

Winds and seas continue to diminish, as we slowly move along with our headsail. Calm enough to go forward and take down our tattered New Zealand flag.

We haven’t motored yet, but have a 3-knot speed threshold as to when we would likely start an engine. We get local bursts of wind from nearby squalls and even a light dusting of rain with one, but they don’t seem to be packing a big punch. Winds have shifted and we jibe our Code Zero, but the winds aren’t settled yet and have a 40 degree bracket of change, keeping us on our toes as we sail to the conditions. One minute we are heading toward Vanuatu, the next Fiji! As night falls, with these light winds, we decide to keep our Code Zero up.

We make progress overnight, sometimes slowly and other times with gusts up to 24 knots, making constant adjustments. In the morning, winds freshen and we get our mainsail out as well and make great time for 4 hours before the wind dies again. We feel good that we have continued to sail, no system barreling down on us that we need to hurry, just enjoying the conditions given to us. I’m calling this our “rainbow passage,” as there seems to be blushes of rainbows everywhere. WE ARE HALFWAY!!!!

Food today: Brunch of Kraft mac-n-cheese (we eat what sounds good out here!). Dinner of arroz con pollo topped with cilantro and avocado.

24 hour total: 115.6 (our slowest day so far!)

Miles to go: 520
