Winds very light in the morning, but slowly picking up. We have our new mainsail out! Sailing along slowly at 3 knots, waiting for the wind to fill in. By dinner it fills in a bit too much…gusts to 33 directly from the West. Squall activity about. We try to avoid squalls if possible, as they have big wind changes in both strength and direction, as well as can have electrical potential in them. We’re in a transition zone between two systems, a high off the east coast of NZ and a big low in the Tropics. It is a gray overcast day.

Overnight, it got a bit feisty with gusts to 35 prompting us to put reefs in our main and genoa. We also had an uncomfortable roll to the boat with the 2-3 meter seas. It was like a bad version of rock-a-by-baby. Thankfully by morning, the wind and seas both decreased. And now, here we are, with too little wind! You just can’t please a sailor. Though I have to admit that this has been a pretty pleasant passage thus far.

Food today: More breakfast cups and muffins. Lunch: big bowl of rapidly ripening avocados lends itself for guac for lunch. Dinner of left overs and grilled cheese.
