Overnight, the bucking bronco sensation of the boat (vertical acceleration), combined with the total darkness, caused Cora and I to feel quite seasick. I made it through 3 hours and 15 min of my 4 hour watch, but then had to pass it off early to lay down. Calder saw a brief heavy rainsquall. Otherwise, just more seas and winds forward of the beam. Blah.

But it’s now morning, skies are clear, and we continue to ride our horse. The winds are “supposed to” back around and we are just waiting for that moment to get sailing again with all sails (we just have our main up currently due to our course and direction of the wind).

The wind and waves are SLOWLY backing around to be more comfortable and our motor is off. This passage is a bit nauseating with the motion. We continue to sail all day, winds max of 30 knots, but mostly average 25 knots. We put reefs in the main and genoa. We continue on our way to Norfolk, will decide tomorrow whether the weather allows us to stop here.
Miles in last 24 hours: 180.2 (excellent day!)
Average speed last 24 hours: 7.5
One response to “Day 2: Passage New Cal to New Zealand”
Spencer here. Ah, after twelve years working on ocean electronics development for the US Navy and a private company in California, I got completely tired of seasickness. That’s when we moved to Albuquerque for many years of land jobs. Much better.
