Welcome to the Hyer Family Sailing Adventures!

We are a family of four from Petersburg, Alaska who are setting sail on our 44 foot Antares catamaran in November 2023 to explore the world together. Our crew is fix-it dad Chris (age 45), family doc Jen (age 44), fishing fanatic Calder (age 13), and artistic bookworm Cora (age 11).

We started our boating life together in Portland, Oregon in 2002 when we moved aboard our 30 foot Sundowner Tug Verstovia as our first home together. The sailing bug struck when we were gifted a 23 foot Pearson named Jackpot and sailed her around the Columbia River, gleefully yelling “Rails Under!” as we learned to sail.

We traded in our trusty tug for a beautiful 36 foot Bayfield cutter, High Endeavours, and this became our family boat. We sailed her across the Columbia River Bar, up the Inside Passage, and across the Gulf of Alaska to Seward, Alaska while Jen completed Family Medicine Residency. We sailed her back across the Gulf to Petersburg, where we have lived for about 13 years, successfully circumnavigating almost every Southeast Alaska island. We live in the land of islands and glaciers, a cruising paradise!

We have thought about world cruising since we were in our 20’s and have decided to make it happen now, as a family, before our kids fly the coop.   9. Wow what wonderful plans ! Paula and I and Verstovia are envious and will follow along. Hard to believe it is 17 years since we all met and we bought Verstovia.

  15. Hello there Hyer Family! What a grand adventure! We too are a sailing family, who’ve happily been on a 45 Freedom for 10 years, currently located in Mexico, but living in San Francisco. We are seriously considering an Antares, and would love to connect on your thoughts, and if ever an option, take a quick peak at your new home – understanding it may be in San Diego?
